Those Three Hours
They both were sitting silently. He driving and she looking aimlessly at the passing road. It was a beautiful morning with lots of mist in it, but they were oblivious to the nature and from each other’s presence. Roads were mostly empty, only some cycles and buses were plying. It was an easy drive without the daily chaos that they were habitual of. He laughed suddenly.
‘What’s so funny’ she looked puzzled. Her one eyebrow was twitched upwards. He looked at her, ‘she looks cute in that puzzled look’ came to his mind but gone as fast as it came, without making any impact.
‘Nothing, it is tough to drive without maddening traffic around’ he laughed again, closing his eyes and pushing his head back for a moment. She smiled looking at him.
‘You are nuts’ with a chuckle she took out her cell phone and called a number.
‘Hi’
‘Very good morning’
‘Still sleeping?’
‘Where have you reached any idea?’
‘What? How much?’
‘Three hours???’ she looked at Rahul and made a face.
‘Oh no, we have already left and are about to reach to station.’
‘Ok…don’t worry. We will be on the station.’ She mwaaaed in the cell and smiled at him. Her sister was coming today and they were going to pick her from the station.
‘Now?’
‘Now what?’
‘Train is running late by three hours. Should we go back and come again?’
‘No, that doesn’t make sense. We will spend some time around’
‘It is not some time, it is three hours sweetheart!’
‘I know, but going back and coming won’t solve any purpose. It is just driving to and fro again.’
‘Hmmm…. Three hours!! I am feeling sleepy now.’ she dragged herself on the seat and closed her eyes. Rahul continued driving and instead of going to station he stopped the car under a big Banyan tree. Reema opened her eyes.
‘Get down’ she rubbed her eyes and looked around. Hanuman Temple? She smiled.
It was an early morning and sweeper was sweeping around. One tea vendor was making tea and some beggars were standing to get the first cup of tea, free from him. Many crows were making obnoxious noises and monkeys were running on the big Pepal tree, shaking the tin roof of the shops and ropes which were tied around the tree and the canopy of the small shops. Big piles of Boondi, and some sweets for prasaad were or sale on the small shops.
Rahul took his handkerchief and tied on his head. Reema covered her head too with her duppata. After buying some sweets they entered the big temple. It wasn’t crowded. The Aarti was going on and they both stood with closed eyes and folded hands. It felt like heaven. Both smiled inwardly thinking of their first meeting. Her parents insisted that both of them should see each other in the temple. That time it was evening Aarti going on and they both were standing like this but eyes diverting to each other. Twelve years passed and they never came back to this temple. In fact they never went anywhere, except meetings, some social obligations or hospital visits at the time of their daughters’ birth.
The rush of maddening life style slowly sucked the intimacy and what they breathed now was just a routine. Standing here in a passive mood they both were amazed by the tranquility around them. After ages they were feeling together. Reema’s eyes welled but she smiled at him and they both came out.
It was a pleasant morning, clouds playing hide n seek. Rahul went to the Chaiwala and brought two cups of tea. They sat under the big tree and slowly started having it with the delicious closeness they were feeling. Words were not required it was just the feeling and they both were enjoying it. Throwing the glasses towards sweeper they both left.
‘Now what?’ this was the softest tone which she almost had forgotten.
‘Keep on watching’ this was the naughtiest and flirtatious tone which he never used.
She was surprised when he parked his car in the CP. He held her hand and pulled her towards the Central Park. Very conscious of his touch she giggled happily like a small girl. The park was full of people. Some were walking, some doing some exercise and some simply sitting and watching. She saw a crowd of some people who were laughing madly. She stood near them surprised.
‘This is called laughing exercise.’ Feeling her surprise he pulled her pony and smiled. People need help to laugh? Laughter was becoming extinct too?
They both started laughing, so much so that the group leader gave them stern looks and they left laughing madly. When did they laugh so much? Both tried to remember but failed. It started drizzling. She went towards car but he pulled her again.
‘Stay here, with me.’ She could feel the urge in his voice. Blushing, she stood near him and both were drenched in a moment with love, and ecstasy. Standing near the car, he pulled her in his arms and kissed her. The lost romance was slowly emerging in that beautiful rainy morning. With a witty smile she kissed him back. They both were feeling like kids who were left loose on a picnic.
‘I love you Re’ he really did but never told her.
‘I love you too Rahul’ she hugged him tightly and repeated her words again n again. He was caressing her wet locks and she was trying to look at him with squinted eyes. Rain was pouring but they were able to see each other today again after years.
The cell phone in his pocket buzzed. They both looked at each other. Three hours passed? How quickly!
After talking on phone for few minutes she sat in the car.
‘Train is about to reach.’
‘Let’s go’
They left for station but now they were not looking at the passing road but at each other and smiling as if they found a lost treasure.

To Ms. Promilla,
The love is like a diamond. You keep it for a thousand years in darkness, under the deep sea; but once it comes out, it is the same: your short story has proved this . You have used some good metaphors like : delicious closeness and drenched in a moment. It's a good read.

Life is becoming too materialistic so much so that the softness, kindness and love is taking back seat. We need to feel the magic of love.:))
